Nico Mallozzi was a fourth-grader at West School and played hockey for the Norwalk-based Connecticut Roughriders.

The hockey club posted a statement on its website:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mallozzi family right now. It is a very sad day for all of us, Nico was a great kid with a great smile and he will be missed greatly. We will never forget you, Nico.”

New Canaan Public Schools Superintendent Bryan Luizzi sent an email to parents Sunday about Nico's death, according to the New Canaan Advertiser.

“Nico was a wonderful, friendly child, known throughout West as the voice of the afternoon announcements that concluded each day. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered,” Luizzi said in the email, according to the Advertiser.

There is no school Monday, but students and staff are invited to gather for support at West School from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, the Advertiser said.

Nico has a sister and two brothers in the New Canaan schools, the Advertiser said.

"The men and women of the NCPD express our deepest condolences to the Mallozzi family with the tragic passing of their son Nico. You are in our thoughts and prayers," the New Canaan Police Department said via Twitter.
